Families from Sussex have been trying out as the faces of the UK version of Homer and Marge Simpson.

One of the most dysfunctional families, The Simpsons cartoon pokes fun at life in the town of Springfield.

Now the Burgess-Hayes family from Brighton have volunteered to become their British counterparts.

Father Brendan, mother Jan and children Logan, five, and Eden, 14 months, said they would love to be the next Simpsons.

They have been selected as candidates on whom a British version of the infamous cartoon series could be based.

Programme makers were in Brighton on Friday looking for willing families and sketching them. The programme will be based on events in their lives.

Jan, of Preston Drove, Brighton, said: "It would be very funny to be picked and a great experience"

Brendan would be the muse for a version of Homer, the blockhead of the family famous for his exclamation "Doh".

The programme is the brainchild of Nickelodeon UK and would be broadcast on the company's cartoon satellite channel Nicktoons TV.

If one of the Brighton families win, the cartoon will be based in the city.

The winners will also get a trip to LA to visit the animation studios.

The Broderick-Lewises were another family as part of Nickelodeon's tour of ten cities in Britain.

Father Jason and mother Pattie, who live in the Preston Park area, were taking six-month-old Zak for a walk with Pattie's sister Jackie Broderick when they were stopped.

Animator John Byrne said: "Most of the characters we've met have been better than we could have imagined."
