Injury-hit Crawley produced their best performance of the season so far as they gained a 1-1 draw at last season's Premier Division runners-up Tamworth.

But boss Billy Smith felt his side should have returned home with all three points. Defender Ian Payne missed a first-half penalty and Nic McDonnell had two goals disallowed.

Smith said: "They are a useful side, but I thought we coped well. We had three up front and created lots of chances which was encouraging."

Payne's 24th-minute spot-kick was saved by Darren Acton after striker Danny Hockton, making his full debut, was fouled by Darren Grocutt.

There were opportunities at both ends with Mark Cooper hitting Andy Little's bar five minutes after the break before Reds broke the deadlock in the 51st minute when Stewart Holmes headed home.

But the lead lasted eight minutes, Scott Rickards levelling for the Lambs with a close range header.

McDonnell had two goals disallowed in the closing stages and the only setback for Smith came when Hockton suffered an ankle injury.

He is doubtful for today's home game against Welling (3pm) while midfield pair Neil LeBihan (calf) and Peter Fear (ankle) are also likely to be sidelined.

Former Albion youngster Kevin Hemsley, who had a composed debut, is to make his first home start.
