A tourist centre has been given a new lease of life by the council which closed it down.

The Beachy Head Countryside Centre shut up shop earlier this year after members of Tory-run Eastbourne Borough Council felt losses of £15,000 could not justify it being saved.

After mass protest, led by Mayor Olive Woodall and a change in council leadership, the centre reopened in June and could be on the receiving end of a £3,750 investment from the now Lib Dem-run council.

Members of the Cabinet committee meet on Thursday to discuss the proposal, recommended for approval by director of tourism and leisure Ron Cussons.

Mr Cussons said: "The centre is a unique resource as a visitor attraction offering many different tourist audiences a location from which to learn about and explore Beachy Head."

At present the centre is operated under lease to Whitbread, an arrangement which formally finishes at the end of September.

If the funding proposal is agreed the money would be spent on opening the centre for 12 months, starting on October 1.

Other ideas on the board include changing the name to The Countryside and Tourist Information Centre.
