A man was arrested after a drunken row with his mother.
Police were called after Joseph Friar refused to leave his mother's home in Palmeira Square, Hove.
When officers arrived, Friar became abusive and aggressive, Brighton magistrates heard.
Police used pepper spray after he refused to get out of the flat.
During a struggle Friar spat at one officer.
Friar, 23, who gave his mother's address in court, admitted a breach of the peace and resisting a police officer.
John Searby, defending, said Friar, who is unemployed, had been invited to dinner by his mother, Shirley.
Mr Searby said: "He said everything was very friendly but they had a lot to drink.
"At one point she wanted him to go and they had an argument.
"He accepts with hindsight he should have left."
Friar was bound overin the sum of £100 for 12 months to keep the peace.
He was given a 12-month conditional discharge for resisting the police officer and ordered to pay £65 costs.
