A couple were punched and kicked to the ground when they were attacked by five people who pulled up beside them in a car.
A 46-year-old man suffered a broken jaw in the attack, which happened at the junction of Old Shoreham Road and Stanford Road, Brighton.
His partner, 50, suffered black eyes and cuts.
The couple were walking home when a green car pulled up beside them.
The occupants, believed to be three men and two women, got out and began punching and kicking the couple.
They stole the woman's handbag before driving off.
Detective constable Gary Pattison, of Brighton and Hove police, said the area was quite busy and he appealed for witnesses.
