A man panicked and fled when shop staff checked a stolen bank card he was using, a court heard.

Justin Pope, 22, of Nesbitt Court, Bewbush, Crawley, admitted charges of deception and attempted deception before Brighton magistrates.

The court was told he used the card to buy clothes worth £148 from a sports shop in Churchill Square, Brighton. He tried to buy a Sony PlayStation for £215 in another shop.

But when staff asked about the card he ran off.

The case was adjourned until October 3. Pope was released on bail.
