The Green Party wants Brighton and Hove to campaign against attacks on Iraq.

Greens believe the city has a duty to press for a peaceful resolution to the crisis because it is a United Nations' Peace Messenger City.

A motion calling on the council to lobby against military action will be debated at a full council meeting on September 26.

Green councillor Keith Taylor said no British forces or bases should be used in any United States-led attack against Saddam Hussein.

He said any military action should have the backing of the UN, that weapons inspectors should return to the country and there should be a peaceful restoration of human rights.

He said: "We are calling on our fellow councillors to send a clear message to Parliament. We are calling on residents to contact their own councillors."

Brighton and Hove is one of 74 UN Peace Messenger Cities worldwide.
