Albion goalkeeper Andy Petterson wants to keep his hands on the No. 1 jersey and stay off the dole queue.
The Aussie continues to deputise for the injured Michel Kuipers in tomorrow's trip to fellow strugglers Millwall.
Petterson's month-long contract runs out at the weekend, but Albion are in the process of resolving his future.
Kuipers is not expected to make his comeback from recurring back trouble until the reserve match at Bournemouth on September 18.
Petterson said: "I am definitely determined to try and hold onto first choice. I will go out and give my best every week and if the gaffer thinks that is good enough and plays me that's fine.
"My contract actually expires on Sunday, so at the moment as of then I am unemployed, but I think the manager is trying to sort something out.
"I think I have fitted in well. Things have gone well for me personally in the games I've played in. I would like to come down here and prove myself."
Petterson has conceded six goals in two games so far against Walsall and Portsmouth, but the former Pompey and Charlton custodian was not at fault for any of them.
"I've enjoyed it quite a lot," he said. "Unfortunately results haven't gone our way, but I have been pleased with my own performance and hope to build on it."
Albion are seeking their first points in five games against the team immediately above them. Millwall are still trying to remove the mental scars of their 6-0 hammering at home to Rotherham on the opening day.
"I wish we had gone there for the first game of the season!" joked Hinshelwood. "They haven't had a great start after reaching the play-offs last season, but that happens some times when you have been so close.
"I am sure Mark McGhee and his staff have been working hard with them and it will be a difficult game for us. It's an intimidating place."
