Traffic was brought to a standstill as a burly binman chased a swan around a busy dual carriageway during morning rush hour.
He was spotted trying to usher the bird off the A259 Brighton Road, opposite Brooklands, Worthing, at about 7.50am.
Traffic stopped to let him save the bird from an untimely end causing long tailbacks on the coast road.
The swan was successfully moved out of harm's way as oncoming cars flashed their warning lights to let others know there was a hazard ahead.
Several pairs of swans, which live on the lake at Brooklands leisure park, were spotted paddling in the sea at Goring earlier this week.
