Most MPs represent town and city constituencies where foxes are often seen as cunning but cute animals causing no more trouble than the occasional raid on a dustbin.

Those MPs are overwhelmingly in favour of a ban on hunting and reflect the view of most of their voters.

But it's a different picture in the country where foxes are viewed as killers whose numbers should be strictly limited.

Many villagers regard hunting as a worthwhile tradition which also helps keep down the number of foxes.

Among them is sports commentator Jimmy Hill from Hurstpierpoint who plans to defy any ban on hunting.

The big countryside march in London in a fortnight's time will show considerable rural support for hunting.

No wonder Tony Blair keeps putting off a decision. With opposition like this, the unpopular legislation may be an own goal.
