A group of Travellers who set up camp on Brighton seafront are set to be evicted by the council.

About 30 caravans and vehicles arrived at Black Rock, near Brighton Marina, in the middle of the week.

Brighton and Hove City Council said the travellers were set to be evicted on Monday morning under a fast-track eviction order.

The move has been welcomed by trader Stewart Gover, of Planet Cycles on Madeira Drive, Brighton, who said the council should act more quickly to remove travellers.

He said: "It's disappointing they aren't removing them sooner. Hampshire and Dorset don't let them in and we should be doing the same. Sooner or later people are going to get fed up with the inaction and will take things into their own hands."

Councillor Mo Marsh, who represents the Marine ward, which covers the Black Rock area, said: "The police are evicting them on Monday and in the meantime they will be monitored."

Emma Nuttall, of the organisation Friends, Families and Travellers, said: "There is a shortage of sites in Brighton and Hove and the answer is for the council to provide more.

"It would cost less to provide sites for travellers than to barricade sites and evict them."
