A man has been arrested on suspicion of indecent assault after a rugby club party.

The man is alleged to have pinched women's bottoms and touched other parts of their bodies.

One victim complained about his behaviour and a female friend remonstrated with a man she thought was responsible, but she picked on an innocent bystander.

Her boyfriend then joined in and was poked in the eyes by the man and knocked to the ground. He fell on a broken glass and suffered a cut to his back.

Another man who stepped in to calm the situation was also attacked.

The fracas broke out at a Hove Rugby Club party on Saturday night at the club's new £750,000 headquarters in Hove Recreation Ground, off Old Shoreham Road.

Police later arrested a man on suspicion of two assaults. A second man was arrested on suspicion of indecent assaults and has been released on police bail.

A second woman has since complained she too was sexually assaulted.

Club officials today condemned those involved in the incidents.

Speaking about the alleged sex attacks, spokesman Andy Ward said: "We abhor this kind of behaviour and an internal disciplinary committee meeting will be held tonight.

"We want to talk to people there and get the story clear.

"Our disciplinary proceedings are independent of any legal inquiries and if it is determined someone behaved in such a way then they can be expelled from the club."

Saturday's fancy dress leaving party included a disco and karaoke.

Police think other women may have been indecently touched and they appealed to them to come forward.

Detective Constable Barry Sutherden, investigation, said: "We are told a number of women had their bottoms pinched and some were touched on other parts of their bodies.

"We urgently need to speak to anyone who witnessed the alleged assaults and any other women victims."

Anyone with information should contact Mr Sutherden on 0845 6070999.
