There were once three giant trees at the centre of Portslade village green - an elm, an ash and a beech.
The great gale of October 1987 damaged the Huntingdon elm, which stood 24 metres high, and two outbreaks of Dutch elm disease finally put paid to it.
The ash tree was also damaged in a storm and felled on November 14, 1991.
Now the beech, the last survivor, has gone.
