An 18-year-old Brighton University student was killed today when he fell on to a live rail while walking along the track.
His friend pulled him off the line and tried to resuscitate him.
The student, studying at Brighton University, had been out with a 19-year-old friend in Brighton.
Both had been drinking and were feeling unwell as they travelled in a taxi from West Street, Brighton, to their halls of residence in Falmer.
They stopped at Moulsecoomb railway station in Lewes Road, Brighton, and decided to walk the rest of the way home along the railway line.
The 19-year-old friend used a mobile phone to call emergency services shortly after 2am.
It is understood the dead student was from the Leicester area.
His friend, thought to be from Suffolk, was deeply distressed.
