Sussex opened their South Western Counties Championship campaign with an unconvincing 2-0 win over Jersey at Lancing.
Goals from Andy Lutwyche and Ben Milford gave Sussex the points but manager John Suter admitted his side were lucky.
He said: "We rode our luck a bit. We didn't play well and Jersey were unlucky not to get anything out of the game."
Lutwyche headed home the opener on seven minutes after Mark Burt had flicked on a cleverly worked corner between Nick Flint and Paul Williams.
Milford wrapped up victory ten minutes from time with a close range header from Matt Duffield's cross.
