Transport bosses today announced plans for improvements at an East Sussex accident blackspot.
The A21 between Hastings and Pembury, Kent, has been long regarded as one of the worst crash spots in the county.
Now there are plans for a dual carriageway from the M25 to the south of Lamberhurst and for single carriageway bypasses to the south of the village.
The proposals, unveiled this morning at St Mary-in-the-Castle on Hastings seafront, will mean trunk road traffic will be removed from villages.
Transport minister John Spellar said: "The Highways Agency is putting forward two schemes as part of its strategy to improve the A21 route.
"Residents will benefit from both the schemes because the agency is taking the trunk road traffic out of the villages and improving life for the community."
Residents will be able to put forward their views as part of a 12-week public consultation process.
