I have just read Marcus O'Dair's review of the Desmond Dekker concert (November 12) and think it was fair, although I couldn't work out why there was a reference to Bob Marley.
Bob and Desmond are like chalk and cheese. Desmond started off solely as a ska singer, whereas Bob was a reggae singer.
Although Desmond progressed from ska to rocksteady and, finally, to reggae, he should have been compared to someone such as Prince Buster or Laurel Aitken.
Back to your review, which said the atmosphere was pumping thanks to a solid support act. There was no mention of their name and opinions I have heard since are the main reason I am writing.
People really thought Too Many Crabs, the support act, should have had a mention. They are a ska band in their own right and play a different style of ska from Desmond.
Although all ska styles originate from Jamaica, they come in many different forms - traditional, two-tone, three-volume, for example.
Too Many Crabs have been going for more than ten years, have played with many famous ska bands and artists and deserve a mention. An article on them would be even better.
After all, The Argus is meant to support home-grown local talent. Well, please support someone other than Fatboy Slim.
He is mainstream and publicity will make him neither bigger nor smaller.
There are a lot of good ska bands who play venues in Brighton and Hove - mostly unnoticed because it's an underground movement.
I don't like this phrase but there is no other way to describe it. With publicity, mainstream interest would begin.
