A church in Goring is facing a £200,000 bill to replace its Victorian roof.
St Mary's Church parishioners in Goring have been warned the beams are riddled with woodworm and the slates need replacing.
The defects were identified during an inspection that is carried out every five years.
Churchwarden Bill Tree said: "It is going to be a long haul but we shall get there in the end. It is a question of drumming up some enthusiasm."
Mr Tree said the work would be carried out on the roof, dating back to 1836, within the next five years, subject to funds being raised.
In addition to raising the £200,000, St Mary's is trying to cut day-to-day running costs after treasurer Ray Whitcombe revealed that nine months into the year expenditure was exceeding income by more than £5,000.
He said: "Unless we take steps to cover our deficit, we shall find ourselves in the red."
