During the war years, thousands, including me, were in the ARP, later Civil Defence.

We worked long hours during the day or night, then went to the allotted depots and were called out to horrendous incidents - fighting fires, giving first aid, collecting bodies and so on.

We didn't get paid, nor did we strike and the equipment we had was pitifully inadequate. In Brighton, we were also a trained as a Home Guard force and would have converted in the event of an invasion.
