Horsham's Richard Hoad again had the edge over Daniel Stepney (Phoenix Club) in the under-15 Reebok Cross Country Challenge at Margate.
Hoad finished 20th (10min.00sec) for the 3km race, eight places and 13 seconds ahead of Stepney.
Crawley's Lewis Denton ran well for 21st (11min.18sec) in the under-13 boys' race over the same distance.
The Crawley club took a group of their Surrey-based athletes to Margate and Danielle Christmas had the best placing when seventh in the under-15 3km race (11min.00sec). Hannah Brooks was 25th (11min.37sec).
Jo Rowland was 23rd (9min.51sec) in the under-13 2.5km race.
Hoad and Stepney clash again in the second of this season's Sussex League meetings at Lancing Manor on Saturday.
The first race in the under-15 series at Goodwood in October was won by Simon Baker (Hastings), ahead of Hoad and Stepney.
Just 13 seconds separated the first six runners at Goodwood so no one is guranteed success in this age group.
