Supermarket giant Tesco continued to outperform its rivals on the back of low prices and the expansion of its non-food ranges.

Like-for-like sales, which excludes income from new stores, were up 3.8 per cent in the 14 weeks to November 16, against 3.4 per cent in the second quarter.

Total UK sales were 7.3 per cent higher than a year ago, while Tesco's international arm recorded an increase of 29 per cent, in line with the group's target.

Sainsbury's recorded like-for-like growth of 2.5 per cent in the three months to October 12 and Safeway a 1.1 per cent increase in the same period.
