A West Sussex grandfather is angry about proposals for a new community hospital in Littlehampton.

Ken Oates, 75, feels Adur, Arun and Worthing Primary Care Trust's plan - to build a hospital on the town's former police station site in place of the current Littlehampton Hospital and the Zachary Merton Hospital in Rustington - is "all wrong".

He says the building will be swamped with noise and traffic and will not provide patients with the calm that Zachary currently offers.

Father of two and grandfather of four, Mr Oates, who lives in East Preston with his wife Ann, said: "The hospital would have all kinds of traffic going past. This is not what patients want.

"The Zachary Merton is the perfect place for a hospital with grounds to walk in. The new hospital won't be as nice. It is all wrong."

The hospital is being built as part of a review of hospital facilities. The PCT originally planned to locate the building on the Zachary Merton site.

But at a meeting in Clapham and Patching Village Hall yesterday, the PCT agreed to move towards a £6.7 million hospital in Littlehampton.

A final decision will be made in February.
