Rude returns, it's a Concorde 2 Christmas and there's a bout of musical chairs for Brighton's seafront clubs.
RUDE, The Zap, Fridays
Rude's launch at The Zap last Friday was a great night - even for a confirmed r'n'b hater like me - so it has warranted another mention. DJ Spoony's stint behind the decks was a tad disappointing but, overall, the mix of music and people made for a great atmosphere. The back room was pretty empty at times but only because everyone had jammed into the main room. There could be a similar problem this week as Mobo 2002 winner Steve "Smooth" Sutherland takes the reins but it's something the promoters can probably live with. Let's face it, attracting a near-capacity crowd in the dead of winter is no mean feat and Rude is worth returning to. The night runs from 10pm to 3am and admission is £8/£6. Call 01273 202407.
BUST THE BOB SKILLS CHRISTMAS PARTY, Concorde 2, Brighton, December 18
A night of Christmas celebrations with DJs from Bust The Box, Bob Dobbs and Catskills Records should be a good winter warmer. It's also a good opportunity to show a bit of charity - a percentage of the money taken is going to be donated to the Inside Out Trust, which aims to help offenders and ex-offenders reintegrate into the community. It runs from 10pm to 2am, admission is £4/3. Call 01273 772770.
EVERY DAY PEOPLE, The Escape, Brighton, December 14
Every Day People plays host to a bit of a legend tomorrow night as Jim "Shaft" Ryan arrives in town. Ryan was one of the main movers behind legendary Birmingham club Miss Moneypenny's. Although he remains involved with the operation, he is now better known as one of the most respected and experienced DJs in this country. Joining him upstairs will be Ash Huntington, Friendly Pressure and Scott Gair, while the boys from Worthing's Pure Plastic Records play downstairs. It runs from 10pm to 3am, admission is £8/7. Call 01273 606906.
MOVE, The Funky Buddha Lounge, Brighton, Tuesdays
Move has had a bit of a makeover recently with a few new faces on the doors and behind the decks. It has dropped progressive house for a more student-orientated mix of funky, jackin' grooves, breaks and anything with a serious groove. The night will be running until December 17 and will then resume on January 7. It runs from 10pm to 2am, admission is £5/3. Call 01273 725541.
Rude's awakening at The Zap has spurred a bout of musical chairs on the seafront, which should be completed in the New Year.
After seven years of giving Brighton that Friday feline, the Pussycat Club has made way for Rude but, from Saturday, February 8, clubbing cats will have another lair to play in, down the road at Concorde 2.
The Pussycat crew is promising its trademark mix of glam and glitz alongside Habs, a new resident VJ, who will be working his magic on a huge digital screen, colourful new performers and an interactive room (whatever that turns out to be).
By the time the Pussycat Club arrives at the Concorde 2, Cream already have left.
The superclub is moving its monthly residency to the Honeyclub and kicks-off the night before the Pussycat on Friday, February 7.
The housewarming will come courtesy of Radio 1 (and longtime Cream) DJ Yousef (pictured above), who will be joined behind the decks by Paul Hillyer and Louis Edwards.
The club has said future highlights will include Lottie (who opened the night in Brighton last February), Futureshock, King Unique and Tom Stephan.
Change is often said to be good - let's hope this holds true for Brighton's clubbers. Watch this space for further details.
