I read Superintendent David Gaylor's comments stating the main reason for the introduction of the "metal mugger" that is the Falmer "temporary speed-trap" roadworks was protection of the public and roadwork contractors (Letters, November 29).

I was flashed at 4.45am on November 19 while driving home after watching the meteor shower.

I thought that pootling along the whole carriageway at 55mph from Lewes was legal and, as no contractors were working at 4.45am, the road was safe.

This is just a money-making scheme. Cameras should be in urban streets, where 30mph should be the norm, not on temporary roadworks on a dual carriageway at 4.45am.

I spoke to a policeman in Hove on the street and he said the top brass all think the thing is a laugh. Stick to proper policing.
