Early birds were the first to use a multi-million pound West Sussex leisure centre when it finally opened to the public this morning.

The Pavilions in the Park complex, in Horsham, opened at 6.30am so fitness fans could have an early dip or use the exercise suite.

The complex was originally due to open in the summer but construction problems led to delays.

Facilities at the £14.5 million complex include a 25-metre eight-lane pool with 360 spectator seats, a water confidence pool and an outdoor swimming area.

There is also a fitness suite, sauna, gymnastics centre, cafe and adventure play area, which will be open seven days a week.

Chris Dier, director of leisure services at Horsham District Council, said: "The doors are open and people have been in the centre using the facilities, which is great to see."

The Worldwide Fund for Nature has praised the building because all the timber used was from renewable sources.
