Mid Sussex and Worthing both lost while Horsham were held to a draw by bottom of the table Old Williamsonians.
Mid Sussex went down 3-2 at home to third placed Tunbridge Wells.
After falling behind on 15 minutes, Mids levelled through Andy Green from a short corner but the visitors then regained the lead from the penalty spot after a short corner strike hit John Toomer's foot on the line.
After the break Tunbridge Wells extended their lead with a breakaway attack. Phil Middleton pulled one back after being set up by James Goodwin with a couple of minutes to go but Mids were unable to find an equaliser.
Middleton said: "Ultimately, we were made to pay for not taking our chances and conceding a couple of goals which could have been avoided."
Meanwhile, an ill-tempered affair saw Worthing lose 5-2 away to second placed Blackheath. Four players were yellow carded, including Worthing's Mark Minchell.
Chris Sciandro, back from university, scored twice, one from a short corner switch and the other a well worked move from open play.
Horsham were hoping for a win at home to Old Williamsonians but ultimately they were glad to salvage a 3-3 draw.
They trailed 3-1 at half time despite Richard Blakesley's goal but turned things around in the second half when Dom Cohen ended an 18-month goal drought by scoring twice from short corners.
