St Leonards player-manager Terry White is battling to keep hold of striker Peter Baker after an approach from rivals Eastbourne Borough.
Promotion-pushing Borough have put in a seven-day letter for the Saints captain, revealed White.
He said: "A few weeks ago he said he would stay and battle it out with us but I shall have to just wait and see what happens now.
"We shall have to see if he sticks by his word but we really want to keep him."
Borough are looking to bolster their frontline and goalkeeper Dean Lightwood has admitted they need more firepower.
The 33-year-old, currently embroiled in a battle with Paul Stark for the No. 1 jersey, said: "We definitely need a goalscorer."
"Every game in this league is hard and we could do with a few more goals going in at the other end to ease the pressure on the boys at the back.
"Last Saturday against Spalding we could have had three or four goals but the ball just would not go in."
Borough will be without top scorer Scott Ramsay for tomorrow's home game against Ashford Town at Priory Lane in the Dr Martens League eastern division.
The former Albion frontman has 15 goals to his credit this season but misses out due to a one-match ban.
Matt Smart, who scored in the 1-0 win at Spalding, is expected to be fit despite suffering an ankle injury in that victory. Defender Ben Austin, who has been plagued by a knee injury, also returns to the squad.
Borough manager Garry Wilson said: "The important thing for us is to stay focused for this game with Ashford and the next one against St Leonards.
"They are both difficult games in their own right - St Leonards because it is a local derby. We want six points from these two home games against clubs lower than us in the table to keep us in touch with the leaders.
"Victories will get us back on track at the top."
Saints entertain Sittingbourne tomorrow as they bid to get out of the relegation places.
White is hampered by the loss of midfielder Steve Ferguson and defender Dave Scott, the recent signing from Dover, who are both unavailable due to work commitments.
