Jack O'Hara, East Brighton's new captain who will be 66 in a few days time, is one of that rare breed of golfers who achieved proficiency in double quick
time.
It was not until he retired in 1985 that Jack took up the game. Returning from Hong Kong, where he played a lot of squash when not managing an electrical business, Jack became a member at East Brighton and soon lapped up all the know-how from teacher Wally Street.
The pupil exceeded expectations and was shortly playing off four. Two years ago Jack and David Hirons, of Cowdray Park, won the Sussex Seniors Championship.
Now Jack is still a tasty six handicap and looking to take the money in his year of office competitions rather than paying out.
At the ceremonial drive-in, Jack was accompanied by Leda Bretveld, the new ladies' captain while Gary Brayshaw, the immediate past captain, unveiled his seasonal project, a chipping green.
