Part of a Sussex supermarket was cordoned off after a rat was spotted on the sales floor.
The rodent was discovered by customers at the Tesco store in Lottbridge Drove, Eastbourne, yesterday morning.
Staff contacted a pest control company and Tesco health officers, who cordoned off the area.
The animal was caught an hour later.
Customer Shaun White, of Luton Close, Eastbourne, said: "It was very funny, they were running around everywhere."
A spokesman for Tesco said it was the first time a rat had been spotted in the store and checks were carried out to see how it had got in.
