Normstock should happen again and Gatwick should have a second runway, according to our opinionated online readers.

Every day, thisisbrightonandhove.co.uk runs a topical poll which net surfers can vote in at the click of a mouse.

The polls remain in place for up to a week and provide a fascinating insight into public opinion in Brighton and Hove.

By far the biggest number of votes was cast about the Normstock saga.

DJ Norman Cook drew 250,000 fans to Brighton beach with a free gig at the height of the summer.

Both the police and the public transport network were pushed to the limits - a woman died after falling from railings after the party and the beach was left strewn with rubbish and broken glass.

However, the vast majority of people had a fantastic time and this is reflected in the votes logged.

Of 797 respondents, 596 - or 75 per cent - said the Big Beach Boutique should be allowed again. Just 201 opposed the event.

Another story to capture the imagination was the death of Bruce the police dog in April.

Bruce was destroyed after biting a 14-year-old boy's ear during a street brawl, prompting scores of people swamping The Argus to protest at the police action.

A total of 430 people registered their vote on this topic, with 348 - or 81 per cent - critical of the force.

Voting was split in the recent hot potato of the firefighters' strike. Of 396 votes cast, 177 supported the FBU. The remaining 219 - 55 per cent - were against the industrial action.

Where Brighton and Hove Albion should play home matches is a subject most people in the city feel strongly about.

Six possible options were given in this vote but 307 of the 390 votes backed the club's plans to move to Falmer. This equates to 79 per cent.

Just 11 people - or under three per cent - thought the Seagulls should make a permanent nest at Withdean.

However, the fickleness of football fans was demonstrated with the successive appointments of Martin Hinshelwood and Steve Coppell as manager.

When Hinsh took the helm, exactly two thirds said he was the best man for the job, despite Coppell being among the other candidates.

But when Coppell took over a few months later, 89 per cent said he was the right person all along.

Animal lovers responded in their droves to the question: "Should the Saltdean badgers be destroyed?" Of 263 votes, 228 - 87 per cent - said no.

The most overwhelming majority of the year was the 114 versus six split when the web site posed the question: "Should private email remain secret unless a threat to national security?" A whopping 95 per cent agreed it should.

Other surveys revealed 81 per cent thought the West Pier should be restored, 81 per cent considered Bobby Zamora good enough for the Premiership, 58 per cent said military action should not be taken in Iraq and 61 per cent thought transsexuals should have the right to marry.

Weary surfers also said they worked too many hours.

Some 69 per cent of people logging on thought they spent too long in the office.
