Saltdean United manager Paul Hubbard is refusing to think about promotion despite his side's rapid rise up the table in County League division two.

A 5-0 win at home to bottom side Oving lifted the Tigers to fifth in the table. It was their third consecutive win and stretched their recent good run to only two defeats in the last nine.

Victory leaves them just five points adrift of the promotion places but Hubbard, who oversaw relegation last season, is not thinking about a swift return to division one.

He said: "We have been threatening to do that to somebody for a while. It is a shame it has come a bit too late to get us into the shake-up.

"A lot of the top four sides have got to play each other so there are a lot of points to be dropped.

"However, it is asking too much to expect us to win 12 of our last 14 games, which I think we would have to do, especially as we have got to play Rye and Iden twice."

The Tigers' goalscorers were Adam Burton (2), Brad Dougal, Bas Allen and Leigh Davis.

Saltdean's next opponents are second from bottom Pease Pottage who moved to within two points of the safety zone with a 2-1 win over Oakwood.

It was their second win in three matches since Dudley Christensen was appointed joint boss to work alongside Steve Bold and it was also a special day for new signing Gareth Neathey, who hit the winner against the club he had left just days earlier.

Neathey scored on his debut in the Boxing Day defeat at home to Broadbridge Heath and struck again to seal victory against Oakwood.

The frontman also missed a penalty soon after Steve Udell had given Pottage a 28th minute lead. Steve Best bundled in an equaliser for Oakwood but, inspired by Ashley Cook, the home side grabbed a deserved second-half winner thanks to Neathey's individual strike.

Christensen said: "If you look at the table it is anyone up to Mile Oak (in ninth place) who could be caught.

"I don't think we will go down. We have too much quality in the side."

Pottage are two points behind Westfield who fought back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 at home to leaders Eastbourne Town.

Town strikers Yemi Odubade and Gary Brockwell celebrated signing contracts with the club until the end of next season by scoring a goal apiece in the first half and an own goal made it 3-0.

Mark Ward struck twice before player-manager Shaun Hardy netted his first of the season to salvage a point.
