Brighton rider Jonathan Sharpe had plenty to celebrate over the New Year.

First he won the Sussex cyclo-cross championship for the fourth time, then finished second in the latest round of the London League to maintain his overall lead with three races to go.

Sharpe (Saucony) clinched the Sussex title when he finished third and was the first local rider in Brighton Excelsior's open race in Moulsecoomb Wild Park.

The 12-mile race was won by Surrey rider Sam Gardner (Evans Cycles). He led from start to finish and Londoner Steve Price (De Laune) was second.

Sharpe was content to hold on to third place to ensure the Ron Ewart Memorial Trophy remained in his custody for another year.

East Grinstead's Andy Seltzer, who finished eighth, was the only other Sussex rider to make the top ten in a hard-fought race that was dominated by the visitors.

Sussex provided the winner of one of the four juvenile races when Brock Duncomb-Rogers (Preston Park Youth Club) won the under-tens race with Jake Hills (Preston Park YC) fourth and Sarah Gent (Sussex Nomads) fifth.

Sharpe then took on the London stars again, this time on their home ground in the Gemini BC's annual end of year cyclo-cross at Footscray.

This was won by Dave Law (Arctic), but Sharpe beat Prince to finish second. Sharpe said: "I may be leading the London League but there are still three races to go and I'll be a marked man now."

Guest star Sean Yates helped promoters raise several thousand pounds for charity as he took part in the 21st Century Airport club's annual 12-hour roller record attempt at Gatwick Airport.

When Yates put his bike on the rollers he kept the speed dial hovering around the 50mph mark. His efforts played a big part in a new record mileage of 823 miles covered by the teams of riders who had taken part throughout the day.
