Simon Rodger is fighting against the odds to be fit for Albion's FA Cup tie at Norwich on Saturday.

Boss Steve Coppell says the midfielder has an "outside chance" of returning for the third round clash at Carrow Road.

Rodger would have missed yesterday's postponed home game against Wimbledon.

The Shoreham-born playmaker suffered further damage to a broken big left toe in the first half of Albion's 1-0 League win at Norwich on Boxing Day.

He has now had a second scan on the injury and Coppell revealed: "It was fine, the same as last time.

"There has been no deterioration, so he has an outside chance for Saturday."

Referee Joe Ross called off yesterday's match following a 9.30am inspection.

The Withdean pitch was already very wet at that stage and further rain was forecast.

It will probably be played now on Saturday January 25, providing both teams are knocked out of the FA Cup on Saturday.

The Dons, whose game against Gillingham last Saturday was also rained off, visit Rotherham in round three.

Sheffield Wednesday capitalised on Albion's inactivity with their first away win of the season in a South Yorkshire derby at Rotherham to send the Seagulls back to the foot of the table.

Shefki Kuqi, who scored a last-gasp equaliser against Albion at Hillsborough last month, put them ahead in the second half.

Adam Proudlock completed a 2-0 victory late on for Chris Turner's strugglers to leave the Seagulls two points adrift at the bottom with a game in hand.

Third bottom Stoke beat Preston 2-1 at home with goals just before half-time by Brynjar Gunnarsson and Peter Hoekstra to move five points above Albion from a match more.

Fourth-bottom Grimsby's key home game against fifth-bottom Bradford was another casualty of the weather.

Coppell took the opportunity to spy on Coventry, Albion's next League opponents at Highfield Road on January 11, in yesterday's fixture against his old club Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
