Today Shirley Cullen is a mother and grandmother. Half a century ago she was a Promette.
With glamourous colleagues, she paraded the prom promoting Brighton as a tourist attraction. They wore uniforms rather like air stewardesses and for two decades the idea really took off.
But any attempt to revive the Promettes today would be grounded by political correctness.
