Labour councillor Juliet McCaffery (Letters, December 30) is correct when she points out that many other nations see Britain as morally bankrupt.
She uses the illustration of the anti-war demonstration in Churchill Square, Brighton, as her example, where people were told to "please ignore the demonstrators and continue shopping". I went to observe the demonstration because I oppose the war and to ensure that demonstrators, security and police all kept inside the law.
I did not see Coun McCaffery there. The ironies don't stop here, however. She accuses President Bush of being blinkered and greedy but fails to mention her leader, Tony Blair, in the same breath. Surely the only other world leader to be taking the US position is worthy of some mention. This is symptomatic of a new trend in Labour politics locally.
Labour councillors are busy publishing leaflets and letters distancing themselves from their own Government's positions and, worse still, Brighton and Hove City Council's positions when they are in fact in charge. George Orwell, please come back, all is forgiven.
