I write to support the maternity department at Brighton General Hospital. While there is no excusing the events that led to a mother being advised to travel to London by train, this is certainly not typical of the care my wife received from the department this Christmas.
My wife was admitted to the labour ward on Christmas Eve at 8pm and gave birth to a baby boy on Christmas Day.
In fact, he was featured in The Argus Christmas Babies feature. At all times, during and after labour, my wife's care was exceptional.
At every stage, the midwives ensured we knew exactly what was happening, offering us comfort and support throughout the night. Even when my wife's delivery became difficult, the team of doctors and nurses who looked after her were magnificent.
As anyone who has given birth (or any man who has watched, like me) will vouch, the first experience of childbirth is at best daunting and can be extremely distressing. Throughout the birth of our first child, we wanted for nothing and even now I still cannot think of a way the service provided could be improved.
The department at Brighton is a credit to itself and the NHS.
