We may not have had a white Christmas but families are being urged to help make it a green new year.

Twelfth Night is approaching on Monday and, instead of throwing away their decorations, householders are being asked to recycle them.

West Sussex County Council, East Sussex County Council and Brighton and Hove City Council are asking people to take their Christmas cards to civic amenity sites and put them into cardboard and paper skips.

They can also be taken to branches of Tesco and WH Smith for recycling for the next two months and all the proceeds will go to charity.

Green garden waste and Christmas trees taken to sites will be shredded and made into compost.

Michael Dennis, Cabinet member for public safety at West Sussex, said: "Recycling Christmas trees is very important as it reduces waste taken to landfill."

There are 10 sites where green waste and Christmas trees can be taken for recycling in West Sussex: Bognor, Horsham, Burgess Hill, Midhurst, Chichester, Shoreham, Crawley, Worthing, East Grinstead and Littlehampton.

Council officials reminded people to take off all the decorations.

East Sussex County Council also has sites available for Christmas recycling in Bexhill, Rye, Battle, Rother, Crowborough, Eastbourne, Forest Row, Hailsham, Hastings, Heathfield, Lewes, Newhaven, Peacehaven, Seaford, Uckfield and Wadhurst.

Councillor Tony Reid, Cabinet member for transport and environment, said: "The Christmas holidays are always a busy time and we're grateful to everyone who brings in their separated waste."

Brighton and Hove City Council has a number of recycling points and is hoping to beat its total of collecting 27,778 trees last year, which led to it winning an environmental award.

Coun Chris Morley, chairman of the environment committee, said: "We hope residents will make use of the recycling points to get rid of Christmas trees and other festive recyclables.

"It would be nice to beat last year's brilliant number of Christmas trees recycled. Residents have really shown their commitment to the environment."

Recycling points will be open until January 29.
