Terry Wing's suggestion of an alternative brownfield site to enable the restoration of our West Pier is excellent (Letters, December 31).
This needs to be acted upon immediately - time is not on our side.
Brighton and Hove City Council should be put under extreme pressure to come up with a site that would be attractive to the developer - now, not even a few months ahead.
I do not know of the progress so far but how about the King Alfred site?
Again, the obvious advantage of a developer that pledges maintenance of the pier means no burden on council tax.
The West Pier Trust is dedicated and committed to restoring the pier and needs the additional private money to achieve this but can only act on what is available.
I am certain even it would prefer not to see our seafront ruined forever.
I appreciate we need to move with the times but it would be negligent for any authority to approve or pass any seafront development which would destroy our heritage.
Once a precedent has been set, it may be difficult to stop building on the whole of our seafront.
I see no competition with the Palace Pier, for the West Pier could partly pay its way if used for theatre, dancing, weddings, exhibitions and conferences.
