A 97-year-old woman who was chosen as one of the 100 faces to spearhead Brighton and Hove's bid for city status has died.
Christina Best, who was the face of 1905, died peacefully of old age in a Seaford nursing home.
Christina was born in North Gardens and later moved to Woodingdean with her parents.
One of seven children, she was meant to have been on the Titanic on its fateful maiden voyage.
The family were booked on board but her mother did not get all brothers and sisters ready in time and they missed the boat.
Christina married Frank Best, an advertising executive, from a Brighton tailoring family and they lived for many years in Bennett Drive, Hove.
A fanatical Albion supporter, he went straight to a match after his wedding.
Despite this, they were married for 64 years and had two children.
Frank died six years ago and was still going to matches in his 90s.
It was Christina's daughter Carole, who suggested she put herself forward as the face of 1905, as one of 100 local people born in each year of the 20th Century.
Carole, who is the former principal of the Brighton School of Music and Drama and still teaches part-time, said: "Mum loved being part of the successful Place to Be campaign and she was proud she did her bit to help gain city status."
