So, the grand old pier has finally succumbed to the sea. Our city mourns, except for a few who just could not appreciate its beauty.
The West Pier was a jewel in Brighton and Hove's crown, alongside the Royal Pavilion, the Victoria fountain, the Regency squares and St Bartholomew's church.
Nothing can replace the loss it will leave - even in the last months of decay the pier's wonderful design could be enjoyed. The seafront will never be the same, whatever the new design.
In its abandoned state, the pier was sanctuary to thousands of birds. I wonder what their future will be and will they be so welcome elsewhere?
The West Pier will live on, captured in books, paintings, postcards and films but nothing replaces the real thing. I'm afraid my vote goes with the "If onlys".
