Norman Baker's assessment of the Iraq situation would be amusing were it not so offensive.

I think George W Bush is on the wrong side of mediocre but I cannot believe even he would have allowed September 11 to have taken place just because he wanted an excuse to invade Afghanistan.

Amazingly, this is what Mr Baker suggests.

I knew someone who was in the World Trade Centre - fortunately, he escaped - who would be staggered to learn his terrible experience was just part of the Liberal Democrat conspiracy theory.

The next time we get such a profound assessment of global affairs from Mr Baker, I suggest he focuses his attention on his own local affairs first.

Liberal Democrat Lewes District Council recently ran a survey and found it was inept at dealing with the floods of 2000 and that many thought the council "a laughing stock".

Perhaps Charles Kennedy could take some time off from his quiz-show duties and advise his MP to engage his brain before opening his mouth?
