Everybody has a part to play in keeping Worthing clean and tidy, according to a council boss.

Paul Kempsell, head of direct services at Worthing Borough Council, was speaking after complaints about litter trapped in bushes outside the Lidl supermarket and Dulux Decorator Centre, where High Street joins North Street.

Mr Kempsell said the area was private land and not the responsibility of the council.

He said: "We would like to see it neat and tidy and cleared up.

"The bushes look very nice but litter gets blown into them from various directions.

"You have got to have a regular regime of mopping it up. As it is private land, the council cannot take over that responsibility.

"The council is committed to keeping Worthing as clean and tidy as possible and everybody has got to play their part."
