Controversial plans to redevelop a seafront petrol station in Worthing have been rejected.
Worthing borough planners decided the move to demolish Brooklands Service Station, in Brighton Road, East Worthing, and build a new and improved garage would be detrimental to nearby residents.
The redevelopment would have included more petrol pumps, a new car wash and a larger forecourt shop.
It would also have involved building on a grassy area at the back of the current forecourt.
Planners refused the proposals by BP Oil because developing the grassy area would be unneighbourly and there were also parking concerns.
BP's plans had attracted criticism on grounds of light and noise pollution and the fact more customers could increase road accidents near the site.
East Worthing ward councillor and council leader Sheila Player said the changes would "generate a significant amount of extra traffic" and cause disturbances for nearby homeowners.
