Life can have its pitfalls when you coach more than one team. Especially when it comes to referees.

Take Phil Waghorn, who is involved with Brighton Bears juniors, Worthing Magic women's team and Worthing Thunder.

He was very unhappy with one of the officials as Bears lost in East London on Saturday, then drove to Southend for the Magic game and found the same ref in charge there.

Bears juniors always faced a tough prospect against table-topping Royals but seven points from Sam Mead helped tie the first period 15-15.

Although East London were playing aggressive trapping defence, they totalled nine fouls to 18 by Bears in the first half and profitted at the foul line to lead 30-26.

Five quick points from Charles Walter helped Bears edge ahead 37-32 before foul calls again came into play.

Josh Allison had already fouled out, the rest of the team were on three or four fouls and East London finished the quarter 50-44 ahead.

A Tommy Duncan three cut arrears to four before Mead left the game with his fourth offensive foul and from that point Royals pulled away to win 73-64.

Bears are at home tonight prior to the Worthing Thunder game (5.45pm) with the cadets hosting East London at Angmering tomorrow (2pm).

Top scorers: Oli Roche 16, Sam Mead 11, Luke Peeling 9.

Bears under-14s had a win double on their long trip to Plymouth. They opened with a 68-16 defeat of Swindon having led 32-11 at the half.

Tom Ward impressed with 15 points, Jack Peeling had ten, Joe Flynn eight and, amid great defence, there was also some sharp shooting by Ella Jones.

Bears were only up by five at the end of a timid first quarter against hosts Tamar Valley.

It was 23-14 at the half but they saved their best until the third quarter, when great team defence and inspiring steals from Ward put them up 43-21.

Good inside work from Matt Watson (13 points) helped secure a 53-37 win as the under-14s remained undefeated.
