Small firms were today urged to step up security in shops, offices and factories after research showed staff fraud was costing £38 million a year.
Stealing was the most common problem, although some companies said employees had set up false accounts to "siphon off" funds.
Many small firms ignored staff pilfering, with eight per cent having no measures to prevent workers stealing, according to a survey of 500 small businesses by insurance firm Eagle Star.
