Police had to call for back up when a teenager who had been stopped for drink-driving resisted arrest and was violent.

Worthing Magistrates Court was told officers had to use pepper spray and a baton before Peter Carmen, 19, of Coombes Way, Lyminster, would calm down.

Peter Lytle, prosecuting, said Carmen had been stopped as he drove his Ford Escort along Church Street in Littlehampton shortly before 1am on November 18 last year.

He said: "After a breath test proved positive he became violent and kicked and swore at the officers."

Officers attempted to get him into a police car using the spray and striking his leg but when that failed they were forced to call for back up from officers in a police van.

Adrian Butt, defending, said Carmen, a labourer on a building site, had gone to watch his uncle play in a band at a local pub and had drunk too much.

He told magistrates: "He accepts it was stupid to drive and that he shouldn't have."

He said Carmen had alcohol problems and could not control his temper.

Magistrate Peter Welch said: "The alcohol offence combined with the mode of driving and resisting a police officer makes it quite significantly more serious."

Carmen, who had pleaded guilty to drink-driving and resisting arrest, was sentenced to a one-year community rehabilitation order, a 60-hour community punishment order and disqualified from driving for one year. He was ordered to pay £55 costs.
