Thank you for drawing attention to the shocking treatment of tenants in flats in Denmark Road, Portslade. Brighton and Hove City Council says if refurbishment is "not cost-effective" it will consider demolition and rebuilding with a registered social landlord.
Such a decision would be disastrous, not just for the tenants immediately affected but for housing in general.
RSL (housing association) tenants pay higher rents and have less security of tenure than council tenants.
The result would be the loss of about 30 council flats which suit the needs of elderly and disabled tenants like those currently living there.
In Tillstone Street three years ago, we fought off a similar proposal and hope the Denmark Road tenants will succeed in convincing the council to abandon what amounts to the privatisation of their homes.
