What a breath of fresh air from Mrs E Knight (Letters, January 18), who hit the nail right on the head.

If only we could knock a few heads together so any stadium built could be used for many different sports, it would help to keep the youngsters off the streets and drugs and perhaps bring some glory to Brighton and Hove and England.

As Mrs Knight says, Withdean Stadium helped produce one Olympic winner. Preston Park cycling track produced Andy Slater, who won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester last year and who had previously won a tandem silver medal with his blind partner, Rob Allen, in the Paralympics in Sydney. Great Britain's track cycling team is now in second place in the World Championship.

I am pleased to say Preston Park cycling track is still being used by youngsters with racing for the under-tens, under-12s, under-14s and under-16s and a full programme for the seniors. On Saturday mornings, a training session for children is held at the track.

Nevertheless, a new track is urgently needed - a wooden indoor track would be ideal, similar to the one in Manchester. It would be good to incorporate it with a new ice rink.

This project has been kept alive by the Keep Sussex Skating group since the days of the SS Brighton. This same stadium should also be able to be used for many other sports - badminton, squash, gymnastics, boxing, wrestling and bowls - with sports physiotherapists constantly in attendance.

Maybe someone on Brighton and Hove City Council will take this project on. I guess I am only dreaming but, maybe, if the sports-minded people of our city joined forces, something like this could one day be a reality. Here's hoping.
