A new Bill allowing bars and clubs to stay open 24 hours a day will bring more people to the centre of Brighton and Hove if it becomes law.

But it will also produce problems for many people living in the city centre unless councillors are able to impose some conditions.

Brighton and Hove has thrived since the resort decided about 20 years ago nightlife need not stop at 11pm.

But the council has sensibly ruled almost all the late-night spots are in places some distance from people's homes, such as on the Lower Promenade.

People who live in the centre of a busy resort have got to expect a certain amount of noise, especially in the early evening.

They are entitled to be able to sleep at night and any change to drinking around the clock must recognise that.
