A sprightly centenarian decided not to celebrate his 100th birthday as he did his 90th - standing on his head.
Sidney Nicholls, known as Nick, stunned guests at his 90th birthday party with his headstand party trick.
But he has given up that hobby after falling into a window and seriously damaging his Achilles tendon.
Mr Nicholls, of Hailsham Avenue, Saltdean, celebrated his 100th birthday on Wednesday at a small party with family and friends.
Although he is still active, he said: "I used to stand on my head to entertain children but there is no way I can do it anymore. It doesn't do to try it at my age."
Twice-married Mr Nicholls was a master builder in south London before retiring to Sussex in 1966.
He credited his durability to an attitude of "early to bed, early to rise and plenty of work".
His love of horse racing is still going strong and he is looking forward to continuing his trips to Ascot and Goodwood this year.
